Social networking business models to shift in 'colonisation' era |
|
Social networking sites such as Twitter and Facebook will look at identifying their most influential members, and what they are saying, in a bid to become more useful to brands doing marketing, a new report claims.
Forrester Research's 'The Future of the Social Web' report looks forward to an era of "social colonisation" on the web, as people who have multiple identities on the web via sites like LinkedIn and MySpace adopt the OpenID system -- currently being developed by web giants including Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft. |

Enhanced TV Applications Video Vault |
|
Enhanced TV is now seen as the next big opportunity to drive mass market audiences to interact with their televisions, to press the "red button" and drive up revenues per subscriber.
It is hoped that presenters or promos will provide a much more effective incentive to the audience to participate with their remote controls.
However as iTV genres go, Enhanced TV is very, very new. It would appear that good enhanced TV requires meaningful co-operation with the digital TV platforms, the TV channels and the programme makers and remains the most immature of iTV genres.
The examples below clearly illustrate the technical and logistical challenges of providing valuable supporting information whilst not detracting from the main programme narrative. One of the biggest challenges facing broadcasters is how to integrate iTV production into the main production cycle. Another major issue is how to reliably synchronise interactive elements with the linear programme. |

Interactive Sports & Betting Video Vault |
|
Sports programming is one of the key drivers of digital and pay Television. With a wealth of statistics, scores and other supporting information available - and a proactive and competitive audience - it comes as little surprise that interactive sports are a key factor in the take up of interactive services on a number of platforms - most notably Sky in the UK. |
|
Shopping & Banking Video Vault |
Many digital interactive TV platforms have been launched on the basis of significant and growing revenues from T-Commerce - particularly in markets where there is an established tradition of "Catalogue" shopping.
Sadly so far - the buy rates haven't met expectations, nor have they grown significantly. T-Commerce services can be effective and revenue generating - but no matter how popular and no matter what level of price point - if the cost to build, maintain and distribute the services outweighs the profit - there isn't much point in being there.
Banks on the other hand are particuarly keen to extend their brand message to all platforms and all devices - as part of a general cost-saving shift from retail to home banking.

Games & Gaming Video Vault |
|
Interactive TV games have become a surprise hit on digital TV platforms around the world. Initially thought of as something to entertain the children, interactive TV games have an extremely broad demographic and BSkyB in the UK has pioneered a pay-to-play business model which delivers significant revenues. Interactive TV games can be a profitable business as they can be easily re-skinned for different markets, languages or cultures. |

EPG's, IPG's PPV & Navigation Video Vault |
This section provides a guide to a number of the EPG's (Electronic Programme Guide), IPG's (Interactive Programme Guide) TV Listings and other "Navigational" services currently on offer in digital TV homes.
These services are highly important in ensuring ease of use, viewer comfort and in the end viewer satisfaction with digital TV networks.
There is a tremendous range of levels of fuctionality in these services from basic Teletext formats, little changed over 20 years through to multi-day, multi-theme EPG's and finally the dynamic integration of PVR (Personal Video Recoder) capabilities that can be found in the latest Sky+ decoders and in TIVO and Replay products elsewhere. |

Interactive Television Advertising Video Vault |
Business models and best practice is still being defined around Interactive Television Advertising. Response rates are encouraging - with click through's seem to be significantly higher than traditional direct marketing - but is this enough?
Despite this, Jupiter Media Metrix predicts that iTV advertising will represent $4.4 billion in revenues by 2005.
Sky has had a significant amount of success so far with over 280 different interactive campaigns to date that have generated around 1.9m online responses.
Advertising campaigns in Interactive Television can range from web-style banner advertising to an enhanced TV style call-to-action (blinking icon) that links to a DAL (Dedicated Advertiser Location).
The technical challenges of ITV go way beyond the skills of most Advertising Agencies, and their commitment to this new medium is still in the balance, however on thing is sure - to succeed, Interactive TV advertising needs to be as clever, rewarding and innovative as conventional TV advertising is today.
Here we present some examples, old and new of how Interactive Television Advertising actually works. |
