The connected home market is developing swiftly worldwide as consumers increasingly wish to access advanced entertainment such as IPTV and video-on-demand from the comfort of their living room, distribute media around the home via their home networks – and more besides. The Connected Home 2008 will showcase the latest trends in this exciting market place, demonstrating the services and products that many consumers now actively seek, and will feature speakers from the most forward-thinking firms in the field.
The trend towards TV/PC convergence is expected to be the next honey pot for telecoms companies, with cable and satellite operators and ISPs also getting in on the act, and developments are moving apace. Consumers increasingly desire access to services such as premium content in high-definition on their television as and when required, and are becoming conscious that broadcast television alone does not offer the same opportunity to maximise their available free time.
The event will also review content protection for home networking – and how it can support increased content mobility and ultimately the concept of peer-to-peer video distribution (super-distribution). The possibilities afforded by the connected home and advanced home networks are not solely confined to the television either – home automation, social networking, interactive television services, and many other services besides can present revenue-generating potential for operators.
Microsoft has recently been reported to be in the middle of developing the next generation of its Media Center operating platform in conjunction with home automation firm Crestron. The two firms are reportedly working to integrate the next generation of Media Center onto Crestron home automation controller tablets, presenting one compelling prospect for home automation and whole-home access to connected home services within the near future. The connection of other home devices such as games consoles to the Internet is also moving forward confidently, with Microsoft announcing it passed 6mn Xbox Live community members earlier in 2007 and before schedule.
Usable business models for these services will be discussed, and the conference will offer delegates the opportunity to hear from senior executives of leading companies which have already started to make the business profitable. What are the revenue rewards for allowing content to be moved freely and what kind of business models will develop for content mobility? When will the enabling home gateway technologies become available? Is content security robust enough? These are just some of the issued that will be addressed at the event.
The advent of mobile multimedia devices is also expected to have an increasing impact on the connected home as DVR content is downloaded onto portable media players, or even direct to memory-enabled mobile phones, and the event will present the latest thoughts on this field.
The Connected Home 2008 will encompass threats and opportunities, revenue generating realism and forward thinking. If you have a professional interest in delivering or enabling infotainment within a connected home environment, this is a must-attend event for 2008.
