Interactive Television Production - Mark Gawlinski

itpgawlinski.jpg (20719 bytes)Mark Gawlinksi (ex ITN and now at the BBC) has published 'Interactive Television Production' (Focal Press), which is a comprehensive overview of all aspects of interactive TV. It is written in simple, easy-to-understand English and offers a great deal of value to anyone working in this industry, whether a novice or experienced commercial or technical manager. Its an ideal 'handbook' and includes chapters commencing with the introductory 'What is interactive television?', through to a break down of the 'Technology' (including some relevant technology theory that explains TV broadcasting, digital TV, set-top-boxes, middlewares and important stuff that gets overlooked – like synchronisation for instance!)

Another interesting chapter that provides insight into the business of iTV is 'Making Money' which includes some valuable case-studies. Whilst 'Production' provides some extremely valuable insight and step-by-step advice on planning and launching an interactive TV service. Read this chapter and you may avoid many of the pitfalls that stop iTV projects in their tracks. plus chapters on 'Usability an design' and 'The Future' where Mark has gathered the predictions and insights of key executives and industry analysts. The book also includes valuable case-studies and some extensive, (although slightly small) colour screenshots.

Convergence Design - Steve Curran

convergencedesign.jpg (26881 bytes)'Convergence Design' by Steve Curran is a visually rich compilation of the very best as well as some of the most visionary interactive services with sections on Interactive Television, Broadband and Wireless/PDA services. It looks at these services predominantly from a design perspective, although other technical considerations are also discussed.

Each case study outlines the challenges that each designer/developer faced and the solutions they employed including production methods and design and usability considerations. As well as profiling some key European iTV services such as ROFL, BBC Wimbledon and BBC Walking with Beasts, the book also provides deep insight into a number of US iTV projects, which much of the international community will be unaware of. As Curran outlines in his introduction, his aim has been to show examples that inspire, regardless of whether they were successes or failures and his hope is that the 'design principles and philosophies, ideas and approaches, successes and failures of these projects will prove relevant to designers of convergent media.

Interaction Design Principles for Interactive Television

Karyn Y. Lu's Master's Thesis: 'Interaction Design Principles for Interactive Television' identifies and articulates interaction design principles for interactive television programming in the United States and elsewhere.

Chapter one presents a brief survey of the field as it stands in 2005.
Chapters two and three categorize iTV by platforms and by persistent television genres, and present representative examples for each category.

Chapter four provides an overview of existing design standards in related areas. Insights from chapters two, three, and four all serve to inform chapter five, in which Lu proposes principles for iTV interaction design by looking closely at existing designs (both deployed and prototyped), conventions, and patterns of interaction.

Lu's analyses are rooted in visual culture and human-computer interaction design principles, and the design principles offered are abstracted from the applications which have been analysed within this framework.

INTERACTIVE TV ADVERTISING:  (FREE REPORT)
Turning Viewers into Direct Leads without a Set-Top Box
Ian Kingsford-Smith, iTV Specialist, Sydney, Australia

In a global context the majority of TV viewers do not have access to interactive TV advertising using set-top box technology. The benefits of using interactive TV advertising is direct communication with the customer/viewer, personal targeting, localised messages, direct sales and can provide an ongoing relationship between the advertiser and customer/viewer.

Response information and qualified leads are the key attraction for TV advertisers. The challenge for advertisers, advertising agencies and broadcasters/networks alike is how to achieve the significant benefits of interactive TV advertising using current consumer devices and platforms to communicate and engage with their customers/viewers.

This paper examines the interactive TV advertising and TV advertising environment and initiates solutions to this challenge.
